Mexico vs Costa Rica: Beach and Adventure Showdown

Mexico vs Costa Rica: Beach and Adventure Showdown

I went to Mexico and got sick.

Not from water or anything you’re supposed to be careful about. Just ate something at a market and my stomach decided it was done with me. Like genuinely done. Spent two days lying in a hotel room in Oaxaca feeling miserable and regretting everything.

My friend was like “this is why you don’t eat street food” and I was like “but the street food is the whole point” and she was like “not when you’re vomiting it back up.”

Fair point.

Then I went to Costa Rica six months later and had the exact same stomach issue. Like identically. Same food, same problem, same hotel room misery.

But something felt different about being sick in Costa Rica? Like I don’t know. The country felt more put-together somehow. Like “yes you’re sick but also we have systems in place for sick tourists.”

Mexico felt like “you got yourself into this, good luck.”

I’m not saying one is better because of stomach issues. I’m saying they create completely different vibes even when the same thing goes wrong.

Quick Honest Take

Mexico is cheaper and has better food and more culture but it’s also more chaotic and requires more street smarts.

Costa Rica is way more expensive but it’s organized and safe and everything feels designed for tourists which is either amazing or annoying depending on what you want.

If you want authentic messy adventure and good food on a budget, Mexico.

If you want relaxation and nature and less chaos, Costa Rica.

Cost Difference (And It's Significant)

Mexico can be insanely cheap if you know where to eat.

I had a meal in Oaxaca that cost like eighty cents. Eighty cents. It was incredible.

Costa Rica everything costs more. Like significantly more. A similar meal would be like $8-10.

Hotels in Mexico: you can find places for $30-40 a night that are decent. I stayed in places for less than that.

Costa Rica: $80-150 minimum for anything that’s not a hostel. The infrastructure costs money.

Food in Mexico: street tacos are like a dollar. Actual restaurants are reasonable.

Food in Costa Rica: $15-25 for meals at local places.

Activities in Mexico: way cheaper. Tours, guides, everything is affordable.

Costa Rica: tourism infrastructure is expensive. Zip-lining tours, nature tours, everything costs more.

Mexico is significantly cheaper overall. Like if you’re on a tight budget, Mexico wins by a lot.

Beaches (They're Different)

Mexico has Caribbean beaches and Pacific beaches so you get variety.

Cancun area beaches are crowded and touristy. Yucatan coast is less developed. Pacific side is different vibe entirely.

Costa Rica has Caribbean and Pacific too but they feel different. Less developed in some ways. More nature-focused.

Mexican beaches have more infrastructure. Costa Rica beaches are more about the jungle/nature aspect.

I’d say Mexican beaches are better for pure beach time. Costa Rica beaches are better if you want beaches plus nature.

Food (This Matters)

Mexican food is incredible. Like genuinely life-changing.

Street food is cheap and amazing. Tacos, tamales, everything.

Regional food is incredible. Oaxaca has different stuff than Yucatan.

Mole, pozole, enchiladas, everything. Food is obsessive in Mexico.

Costa Rica food is… fine? Like it’s good but it’s not like a whole culture of incredible food.

Gallo pinto (rice and beans) is traditional. Seafood is good. But it’s not like Mexico where every meal is an experience.

Mexico wins food by like a thousand miles.

Nature and Adventure

Mexico has cenotes, zip-lining, some hiking, caves.

It’s good. But nature is kind of supplementary to the culture.

Costa Rica is basically entirely about nature. Rainforest, zip-lining, wildlife, waterfalls.

If you want to see sloths and monkeys and jaguars and be in a jungle, Costa Rica.

If you want beaches plus some adventure plus culture, Mexico.

Vibe and Actual Experience

Mexico feels like you’re in a real country where people live.

Like you’re experiencing actual Mexican life. Chaos and culture and history.

Mexico vs Costa Rica: Beach and Adventure Showdown

Costa Rica feels like nature tourism. Like it’s designed for tourists to experience nature.

It’s not bad. It’s just a different thing.

Mexico feels like adventure. Costa Rica feels like a vacation.

Safety

Mexico: depends on region. Tourist areas are safe. Some areas aren’t. You have to be aware.

Costa Rica: consistently safe. Known as the safest Central American country.

My stomach issue happened in both but I felt safer in Costa Rica generally.
