The bed-in-a-box mattress industry is not so much crowded as heaving. Even if you narrow it down to the hybrid bed-in-a-box mattress industry, it’s easy to be blinded by the sheer number of options.
Still, hybrids are a good place to start if you’re seeking a new mattress. While the two main mattress types used to be foam or springs, these clever mattresses combine the best of both worlds for optimum comfort, support and longevity. Yet they can still easily fit in most cars or up narrow stairways before you roll them out to their full size.
The British brand Simba is so sold on the concept that it produces nothing else. Its signature mattress – the Simba Hybrid (there’s also a fancier version, the Simba Hybrid Pro) – makes some bold claims, not least that it’s produced using the insights from 10 million sleepers.
The brand also says that pretty much every layer has been designed to promote airflow and cooling – a biggie when you consider that getting overly hot at night is one of the most common niggles around mattresses containing foam.
A third claim – that it suits all body types – is also brave given that certain mattresses tend to suit lighter or heavier, taller or shorter, people better than others.
Simba used 70 prototypes and the “body data of 10 million sleepers” to create the original Simba Hybrid mattress. The brand also makes the very bold claim that this mattress will give you the “perfect night’s sleep”. We tested this out for ourselves, sleeping on the Simba Hybrid for four consecutive weeks before delivering our review verdict.
For the low price you get five layers, including a comfort layer comprising up to 2,500 titanium Simba Aerocoils, and a zoned base ensuring stability at the foundation. Other features include temperature-regulation in the form of airy open-cell graphite-infused Simbatex, plus a breathable sleep surface. The Simba Hybrid is made with non-toxic materials, all of which are 100% recyclable.
Simba offers mattresses that not only feature high quality foam with their proprietary Simba-Pure comfort layers, but also thousands of innovative micro pocket springs that adapt seamlessly to support the spine. They have used millions of sleeper data points to craft their mattresses and overwhelmingly get good feedback from customers on initial comfort.
Simba’s three flagship mattresses feature pocket springs and layers of foams that help alleviate pressure point pain. Their Simba Hybrid® mattress and Simba Hybrid® Pro are their most popular. We’ll go through each of mattress so you know which will do best for your body.
Layer 1: Simba’s cover layer is made with hypoallergenic air flow in mind. It is made of a synthetic blend and breathes easy.
Layer 2: Open-cell foam is the first comfort layer that is more responsive than memory foam while still dissolving away pressure point pain.
Layer 3: 2,500 Aerocoil® conical titanium micro pocket springs adjust to your spine and sleeping position and adapt seamlessly so you won’t disturb your partner. Unlike larger pocketed spring support systems, this layer balances support with pressure relief and contour.
Layer 4: A high-definition foam layer offers a transitional supportive layer, focusing on edge support and subtle pressure relief.
Layer 5: The foundational base foam has zones to support the spine in an ergonomic way. These zones also help air movement to keep things cool.
Layer 1: The top layer is cooling fabric with hypoallergenic air flow that is super soft, and only available in the Pro mattress.
Layer 2: There is a natural British wool layer that provides extra airflow and temperature regulation for a cosy night sleep at any time of the year.
Layer 3: Simba’s proprietary open-cell foam layer adapts to the body without trapping sleepers in position. This layer alleviates pressure points while being responsive and cool.
Layer 4: The Pro has two patented spring layers, which work together to cradle the spine, and provide extra responsive support without risking partner disturbance.
Layer 5: A high-definition foam layer adds extra pressure relief and transitional, supportive comfort.
Layer 6: The last layer is a zoned support base that provides extra air flow while supporting the middle spine, and relieving pressure on the hips and shoulders.
Layer 1: The Luxe has a slightly different cover layer, which features open-cell casing for additional cooling.
Layer 2: The wool layer is supplemented with bamboo in the Luxe for enhanced airflow and temperature regulation for a cool, soft touch throughout the night.
Layer 3: Simba’s proprietary open-cell foam layer reacts to the body’s curves without trapping sleepers. It further relieves pressure, while staying responsive and cool.
Layer 4: The Luxe also has two patented spring layers, that work symbiotically to provide contouring support while minimising motion transference.
Layer 5: A high-definition Simba-Pure layer adds edge support and a responsive transition that works with the layers above and below.
Layer 6: A supportive 40MM high carbon steel spring layer adds adaptive firmness around while individually adapting to the lumbar system.
Layer 7: The last layer is a zoned support base, supplemented with extra airflow channels. With the above spring layer, side sleepers will feel extra pressure relief that doesn’t diminish from central back support.
Customers report that all three of these mattresses work well supporting the spine, with the Luxe version providing the softest comfort for side sleepers, and the popular Pro offering the best balance for side sleepers and combination sleepers that need additional support. Those that are stomach sleepers or have larger body types may enjoy the extra support of the Hybrid version.
The ergonomic design of these mattresses with the micro pocket springs bring out the best between pressure pain relief and elevated spine support, which will help most sleepers feel comfortable all night long. Customers report increased support in the Hybrid and Hybrid Pro.
The wool layers in the Pro and Luxe versions offer superior temperature regulation overall. While most sleepers report cooling sleep due to the open-cell fabric and Simba-Pure technology, there were some recent reports of some heat retention during the warm months.
The Final Word
The Simba Hybrid® and the Simba Hybrid® Pro are ideal mattresses for those that desire a high quality and balanced support. The Luxe differentiates itself with an extra cosy plush comfort for those soft loving side sleepers among us.
